How artists use linseed oil

Glazing
Mix a little oil into transparent colours and brush them thinly over a dry layer. Each glaze adds depth without hiding what is underneath.
Fat over lean
Add slightly more oil to each layer as you work up the painting. Lean underlayers and oil-rich top layers help the painting dry evenly and stay flexible.
Smoother brushwork
A touch of oil helps paint glide off fine detail brushes and soft bristles, especially with heavier pigments or on cool days.
A glossier finish
Oil-rich passages dry with more shine. Keep oil-rich mixtures for final layers for a more even sheen across the painting.

FAQs

How do I thin oil paint with linseed oil?+
Mix a few drops of linseed oil into the paint on your palette with a palette knife until it reaches the consistency you want. Add oil gradually rather than all at once.
What does fat over lean mean?+
It means each layer of an oil painting should contain a little more oil than the layer beneath it. This helps the upper layers stay flexible as the painting dries and reduces the risk of cracking.
Can I mix linseed oil with other painting mediums?+
Yes. Artists often combine it with other oil mediums such as stand oil or alkyd mediums to adjust drying and levelling. Test any mixture on a sample first.
Why is my painting taking so long to dry?+
Adding a lot of linseed oil slows drying. Use smaller amounts, keep underlayers lean, and let the painting dry in a warm, well-ventilated room.

Use in a well-ventilated area.
Storage
Keep the bottle tightly sealed, in a cool place away from direct sunlight.
Not for consumption
This is an art and timber oil, not a food or supplement oil. Keep out of reach of children.

I needed a little, not a lot

My home needs detoxing, there are lots of partially used bottles of chemicals and flammables. It was great to be able to buy 250ml. Not for paint, but to nourish and protect timber - a splitting maul handle. Great price and sevice too! Cheers
