Why use this gesso

Why off-white gesso?
Many painters find a stark white canvas harder to judge values against. An off-white gesso primer gives a gentler starting point for portraits, landscapes and traditional oil painting.
Off-white vs white gesso
Both prime and seal the same way. The only difference is the tone of the ground you paint onto.

Surfaces you can prime

Stretched canvas
Canvas boards
Plywood
MDF
Timber panels
Paper & card
Plaster
Brick

How to apply gesso

1
Stir and prepare
Stir the gesso well. Make sure the surface is clean, dry and free of dust or grease.
2
Seal absorbent surfaces
On very absorbent surfaces such as raw MDF or timber, thin the first coat with up to 20% water or Solid Solutions Flow Medium.
3
Apply thin, even coats
Use a wide flat brush or foam roller and alternate the direction of each coat. Let each coat dry fully before the next.
4
Build the right number of coats
Two coats for acrylic painting, and a minimum of three for oil painting. Sand lightly between coats for a smoother finish.

FAQs

What is the difference between white and off-white gesso?+
Both are the same professional gesso primer. Off-white gives a softer, less stark ground than bright white, which some painters prefer for judging colour and value.
How many coats of gesso do I need?+
Two coats are recommended for acrylic painting to ensure total coverage. For oil painting, apply a minimum of three coats. Sand between coats for a smoother finish.
Can acrylic gesso be used under oil paint?+
Yes. Solid Solutions Gesso Primer is compatible with both acrylic and oil paints. For oil painting, apply a minimum of three coats for best results.
Can I thin gesso with water?+
Yes. Reduce the viscosity with up to 20% water or Solid Solutions Flow Medium. A thinned first coat helps seal very absorbent surfaces like raw MDF or timber.
Is this gesso non-toxic?+
Yes. Solid Solutions Gesso Primer is a non-toxic, water-based acrylic gesso, Australian owned and made, and cleans up with soap and water.

Friendly help, quality products

Outstanding service, friendly help when needed. Quality product.
On checkout, you are given a choice of courier services. Don’t be tempted to just choose the cheapest. I made that mistake once. The courier you choose will impact on delivery time as well as tracking ability. Luckily solid solutions helped me get my parcel once I reached out to them. I’ve since placed more orders and received my stock quickly.
