How to use masking fluid

1
Start with dry paper
Shake the bottle gently. Apply only to dry paper; masking fluid should not go onto wet or damp paper.
2
Apply the masking fluid
Brush, dot or draw the fluid onto the areas you want to keep free of paint. Use an old or dedicated brush and rinse it in soapy water often.
3
Let it dry completely
Wait until the masking fluid is fully dry before painting over it.
4
Paint over it
Paint your washes and colours freely over the masked areas.
5
Remove it
Once the paint is completely dry, rub or gently peel the masking fluid away with a clean fingertip or a rubber pickup eraser. It rolls into small rubbery pieces, revealing the untouched paper underneath. Remove it as soon as practical, as it can become harder to remove over time.

Always test a small amount first

Before masking a finished piece, try a small amount on a scrap of the same paper or surface with the same paint. Papers, canvases and paints behave differently, and a quick test shows how cleanly the masking fluid lifts away.

FAQs

What is masking fluid used for?+
Masking fluid is a liquid latex mask you paint onto dry paper to protect areas from paint. It is mainly used in watercolour to keep the paper white for highlights, fine lines and details, then rubbed away once the painting is dry.
Can I use masking fluid on watercolour paper?+
Yes, it is made for watercolour paper. Apply it to dry paper, let it dry, paint over it, then remove it to reveal the untouched paper. Do not leave it on for very long periods, as it can become harder to remove and may damage softer papers.
How do I remove masking fluid?+
Wait until the paint is completely dry, then rub or gently peel it off with a clean fingertip or a rubber pickup eraser. It usually rolls into little rubbery pieces as you rub it away.
Does masking fluid work with acrylic paint?+
Generally yes. Mask an area, paint acrylic over it, then remove the masking fluid once the paint is dry. Test first, because acrylic can form a tougher film over the mask and sometimes tears along the edge instead of separating neatly.
Can I use masking fluid on canvas?+
It can work, but results depend on the canvas texture and primer. On coarse canvas the fluid can get into the weave and become difficult to remove. It works best on a smooth, well-primed surface.

Good value masking fluid

If you’ve ever bought tiny little containers of masking fluid from art supply stores you’ll know how expensive they are and how frustrating it is to run out of fluid in the middle of a project.
The four litre fluid from Solid Solutions is great value, works well and easily decanted into smaller containers; mine will last me a long time still, but I will certainly use this option when I need more
