Purple Iris mica powder gives clear epoxy resin a rich iris purple colour with a fine, pearlescent shimmer. It is a highly concentrated titanium mica pigment in a 20g jar that disperses easily into resin. Use it for iris geode edges, dusted moulds and shimmering river tables. Add a small amount to your mixed resin and build up gradually. A little goes a long way.

What Purple Iris does in resin

Iris shimmer in resin
Purple Iris adds a fine, pearlescent shimmer to clear epoxy resin rather than a flat block colour, and the shimmer deepens as you add more powder.
Dusted moulds
Brush a thin, even layer of dry Purple Iris into a silicone mould before pouring clear resin over it, for a shimmering iris surface once demoulded.
Layered with pigment paste
For a solid iris base with shimmer on top, colour your resin with a iris pigment paste first, then stir in or dust on Purple Iris.

Best for

Iris geode and agate art
Dusted moulds
River tables
Jewellery and coasters

How to colour epoxy resin with Purple Iris mica powder

1
Mix your resin first
Measure your resin and hardener at the correct ratio and mix them thoroughly before adding any colour.
2
Add the mica gradually
Stir in a small amount of powder, mixing until there are no dry specks or clumps.
3
Build up the shimmer
Add more powder a little at a time until the shimmer is as strong as you want. You can always add more, but you can't take colour out.
4
Pour, or dust a mould first
Pour as normal within your resin's working time, or brush dry powder onto a mould before pouring clear resin over it for a dusted finish.

FAQs

How much mica powder do I add to resin?+
Start with a small amount and build up gradually until you reach the depth of shimmer you want. Mica is concentrated, so it is easy to add more but impossible to take out.
Why is my mica powder clumping?+
Clumping usually means the powder went in before the resin and hardener were fully combined, or too much was added at once. Mix your resin thoroughly first, then stir the mica in gradually.
Can I mix Purple Iris with other mica colours?+
Yes. All Solid Solutions mica shades are intermixable, so you can blend Purple Iris with any other colour in the range to create your own shade.
Is Purple Iris lightfast?+
Yes. It is manufactured with lightfast pigment, so it resists fading over time.
Can I use mica powder in UV resin?+
Only in a very small amount, because the light needs to pass through the UV resin to cure it. We do not recommend it.
Can I use mica powder in acrylic resin?+
Yes. Mica can be added to most water-based systems.

Mica powder vs other colourants

vs pigment paste
Mica powder gives a pearly shimmer rather than a flat, solid colour. Choose pigment paste when you want strong, even coverage instead.
vs alcohol ink
Alcohol inks give transparent colour and are known to fade in sunlight. Purple Iris is made with lightfast pigment.
vs acrylic paint
Acrylic paint contains water, which can interfere with curing and leave streaks. Mica powder is made to mix into resin.

Safety & storage

Protection
A mask and protective wear must be worn at all times.
Ventilation
Use in a well-ventilated area only.
Storage
Store the jar sealed, in a cool place away from direct sunlight.
Before each use
Stir the jar before use, because mica powder can settle over time.
