How to use River Resin Deep Cast Epoxy

1
Prepare
Warm the resin and hardener before use for maximum clarity. Pre-seal natural wood edges with Solid Cast 606 Clear Casting Epoxy Resin to stop air bubbles rising from the timber.
2
Measure 2:1
Measure 2 parts Part A to 1 part Part B by volume into a straight-sided container, or an open pail for batches of up to 16 litres.
3
Mix
Blend with a paint mixer on a drill at slow speed for several minutes until the mix is evenly clear.
4
Pour
Pour from a few centimetres above the cavity and let the resin flow along it. After 5 minutes, top up if needed.
5
Cure
Cure at a constant 25 °C (minimum 20 °C). It is touch dry in around two days, when a second pour can go on top, and needs a further two days before sanding.
6
Sand and finish
Cut back with a belt sander at 80 grit, then an orbital sander from 80 through to 320 grit. For more clarity, wet sand at 500, 800 and 1500, then finish with wood oil or polish.
Pour between 15 mm and 50 mm per pour. This keeps the exotherm reaction at a safe temperature.

FAQs

What is the mix ratio for River Resin?+
2 parts resin (Part A) to 1 part hardener (Part B) by volume. Mix in a straight-sided container, or in an open pail for batches of up to 16 litres.
How deep can I pour River Resin?+
River Resin is formulated for deep casting from 1 mm to 50 mm. For deep pours, keep each pour between 15 mm and 50 mm for a safe exotherm reaction temperature.
What is the working time?+
River Resin has a low exotherm, giving about two hours of working time at 25 °C and 40% humidity.
How long does River Resin take to cure?+
A touch dry cure occurs in around two days. Allow a further two days for full cure before sanding. Cure at a constant 25 °C, with a minimum of 20 °C.
Can I pour a second layer?+
Yes. Pour the second mix on top during the touch dry period of around two days, so the layers chemically crosslink.
How do I stop bubbles coming out of the timber?+
Pre-seal natural wood edges with a liberal coat of Solid Cast 606 Clear Casting Epoxy Resin. This stops air rising out of the crevices while the resin thickens during curing.
Can I use River Resin to fill knots and cracks?+
For knot hole and crack filling of up to 15 mm, Solid Cast 606 Clear Casting Epoxy Resin is the better choice. River Resin is made for deep casting.
Why is my resin thick or cloudy?+
Resin and hardener can go thick and cloudy in cold weather. Stand the closed bottles in warm water until the liquids are clear and free-flowing, then dry the bottles before you open and mix them.
How much heat can River Resin handle?+
Once cured, River Resin is temperature resistant up to 80 °C.

Clean-up
Remove uncured resin with a solvent or methylated spirits, then wash with warm soapy water.
