About Burnt Sienna

Derived from the burning of raw sienna, Burnt Sienna is a rich, warm brown colour. Sienna, a natural yellow clay found in the earth, deepens in colour when subjected to heat. Among the oldest pigments, it traces its roots to prehistoric cave art.

Named after Siena in Italy, where it was sourced during the Renaissance, Burnt Sienna is a semi-transparent colour with red-brown tones.

Mixing with Burnt Sienna

Skin tones
Mix with Titanium White and a touch of red for warm skin tones.
Greys
Mix with Ultramarine Blue for rich, warm-to-cool greys.
Terracotta
Add a little Red Oxide or white for terracotta and clay tones.

Is burnt umber or burnt sienna better?+
They do different jobs. Burnt Sienna is warmer and redder, great for skin tones and terracotta. Burnt Umber is darker and cooler, better for shadows and darkening other colours.
What colour can I use instead of burnt sienna?+
