Why use this binder medium
Make your own acrylic paint
Turn dry pigments and mica powders into a flexible, water-resistant acrylic paint in exactly the colour you want.
A handy size to experiment
The 250ml bottle is ideal for testing pigment mixes, small batches and mixed media projects.
What binder medium does to your paint
Better adhesion
Helps paint grip the surface.
Stronger, more durable paint
The dried film is tougher and more durable.
Extends without weakening
Stretches your paint further without the loss of strength that adding water causes.
More transparency
Adds binder without adding pigment, so colours become slightly more transparent.
Better film formation
The paint dries to a more continuous, tougher layer.
Make your own paint
Mix with dry pigments or pigment dispersions to create your own acrylic colours.
Binder medium is not just a thinner
Too much water reduces the amount of binder surrounding the pigment and can weaken adhesion and water resistance. Adding binder medium maintains or increases the acrylic polymer content. For example, 100 g of acrylic paint with 20 g of binder medium gives a slightly more transparent paint with better flow and plenty of acrylic resin, rather than a watered-down paint.
Best for
Making your own acrylic paint
Mica powder paint
Sealing raw canvas before painting
Sealing paper, wood and MDF
Extending acrylic paint
Mixed media
How to use acrylic binder medium
1
Shake the bottle
Give the bottle a gentle shake before use.
2
To make your own paint
Place the Acrylic Binder Medium in a clean container and add dry pigment, pigment dispersion or mica powder a little at a time, mixing until smooth and evenly coloured. Keep adding until you reach the colour strength and consistency you want.
3
To seal or size a surface
Brush the medium straight onto canvas, paper, wood or MDF to seal the surface and stop paint from seeping through. Let it dry before painting.
4
To extend acrylic paint
Stir binder medium into your acrylic paint, up to 2 parts paint to 1 part medium. For example, 100 g of paint with 20 g of binder medium gives a slightly more transparent paint with better flow and plenty of acrylic resin, rather than a watered-down paint.
5
Let it dry
Allow to dry fully. The film dries clear, non-yellowing and water resistant.
Always test a small amount first
Pigments, mica powders and surfaces all behave differently. Mix and brush out a small test batch first to check the colour, consistency and finish before starting your piece.
FAQs
What is acrylic binder medium?+
Acrylic binder medium is a water-based acrylic emulsion, the same kind of binder that holds acrylic paint together. It binds dry pigments and mica powders into a durable paint film, seals canvas, paper and wood, improves adhesion and extends acrylic paint without weakening it.
Can I use it to make my own acrylic paint?+
Yes. Mix dry pigment, pigment dispersion or mica powder into the binder a little at a time until you reach the colour and consistency you want. Test a small batch first, as every pigment behaves differently.
Why use binder medium instead of water?+
Binder medium is not just a thinner. Too much water reduces the amount of binder around the pigment, which can weaken adhesion and water resistance. Binder medium maintains or increases the acrylic polymer content, so the paint stays strong and durable once dry.
Can I mix mica powder with binder medium?+
Yes. Stir mica powder into the binder to make a shimmering metallic acrylic paint that dries water resistant.
Is this a watercolour binder?+
No. This is an acrylic binder that dries to a water-resistant film. Watercolour paints use a re-wettable binder such as gum arabic.
Clean up & storage
