How to apply gesso

1
Stir and prepare
Stir the gesso well. Make sure the surface is clean, dry and free of dust or grease.
2
Seal absorbent surfaces
On very absorbent surfaces such as raw MDF or timber, thin the first coat with up to 20% water or Solid Solutions Flow Medium.
3
Apply thin, even coats
Use a wide flat brush or foam roller and alternate the direction of each coat. Let each coat dry fully before the next.
4
Build the right number of coats
Two coats for acrylic painting, and a minimum of three for oil painting. Sand lightly between coats for a smoother finish.

FAQs

Why buy gesso in a 4 litre size?+
The 4 litre size suits artists who prime large canvases, several panels at once or work in a studio, so you are not reordering small tubs mid-project.
How many coats of gesso do I need?+
Two coats are recommended for acrylic painting to ensure total coverage. For oil painting, apply a minimum of three coats. Sand between coats for a smoother finish.
Can acrylic gesso be used under oil paint?+
Yes. Solid Solutions Gesso Primer is compatible with both acrylic and oil paints. For oil painting, apply a minimum of three coats for best results.
What surfaces can I prime with gesso?+
Canvas, canvas boards, plywood, MDF, timber panels, paper, plaster, brick and other boards. Make sure the surface is clean, dry and free of dust or grease first.
Can I thin gesso with water?+
Yes. Reduce the viscosity with up to 20% water or Solid Solutions Flow Medium. A thinned first coat helps seal very absorbent surfaces like raw MDF or timber.
