Why use this pouring medium

What does a pouring medium do?
It thins acrylic paint to a smooth, pourable consistency while keeping the paint film strong, so colours flow, blend and self-level instead of cracking.
A handy size for smaller pours
The 250ml bottle suits smaller canvases, coasters and trying out colour combinations.

How to use pouring medium

1
Prepare your workspace
Work on a flat, level, protected surface and raise the canvas slightly so excess paint can drip away.
2
Mix paint and medium
Mix 1 part acrylic paint with 1 to 2 parts Pouring Medium, for example 50 mL paint to 50–100 mL medium. Start closer to 1:2 for heavy-body acrylics; 1:1 is often enough for fluid acrylics. Stir slowly until smooth and free of lumps.
3
Check the consistency
Aim for warm honey or pouring cream: the mix should flow off the stirring stick in a smooth, continuous stream without being watery. Add a very small amount of water only if you need extra flow.
4
Pour and tilt
Pour from a layered cup or colour by colour, then tilt the canvas to move the paint. Add a little silicone oil if you want cells.
5
Dry level
Leave the piece flat to dry. Most pours are touch-dry within 24 hours and fully cure over several days, then can be varnished.

FAQs

What is acrylic pouring medium used for?+
Pouring medium is mixed with acrylic paint to increase flow and self-levelling so the paint moves freely across the surface without breaking down the acrylic binder. It is used for acrylic pouring, fluid art, marbling and high-gloss glazes.
What ratio of pouring medium to paint should I use?+
Use 1 part acrylic paint to 1 to 2 parts pouring medium, for example 50 mL paint with 50–100 mL medium. For thicker, heavy-body acrylics start closer to 1:2; for already-fluid acrylics 1:1 is often enough. Aim for a warm-honey consistency that flows off the stick in a continuous stream.
Why use pouring medium instead of water?+
Water alone weakens acrylic paint if you use too much. Pouring medium keeps the dried paint film strong, flexible and durable while improving flow and gloss.
How do I create cells?+
Add a small amount of silicone oil to the mixed paint and stir gently. Over-stirring breaks the silicone into very fine droplets and gives smaller cells.
Why is my pour cracking?+
Cracking or separation is usually caused by over-thinning with water, pouring very thick layers, or drying too quickly in hot or dry conditions.

Clean up & storage

Clean up
Wash brushes, cups and tools with soap and water while the medium is still wet.
Mixed paint
Store leftover mixed paint in an airtight container. Stir gently before reuse, as pigments may settle.
Drying
Dry pours on a level surface. Most are touch-dry within 24 hours and fully cure over several days.
