What are acrylic mediums?
An acrylic medium is a water-based acrylic polymer that you mix with acrylic paint, or use on its own, to change the paint without changing its colour. Mediums can add body and texture, improve flow, extend paint, increase transparency or change the finish from gloss to matte.
Unlike adding water, a medium keeps plenty of acrylic binder around the pigment, so the paint film stays strong and flexible once dry.
Which medium do I need?
Texture & body
Gel Medium Gloss / Matte
A soft, translucent gel that adds volume to paint and intensifies colour depth. Builds thick 3D texture and suits multi-layer work. Gloss or matte finish.
Impasto Medium
A full-bodied medium that adds extra body to acrylic colours without changing their hue, for thick, three-dimensional brush and knife marks.
3D Textured Modelling Paste
An opaque white acrylic paste for raised 3D texture. Apply with a brush or palette knife, then paint over it or tint it with acrylic colour.
Resin Sand Texture Medium
A heavy body, coarse gel with aggregates for sandy, dimensional effects. Mix with acrylic paint or use undiluted and paint over when dry.
Dimensional Joint Compound
A smooth, spreadable textured compound for textured art that can be sanded and tinted.
Flow & fluid art
Pouring Medium
Turns acrylic paint into a fluid pouring paint. Mix 1 part paint to 1 to 2 parts pouring medium to a warm honey consistency.
Flow Medium
A transparent, flexible, non-yellowing medium that reduces viscosity for smooth blending, glazing, gradients and underpainting.

Acrylic Binder Medium
Binds dry pigments and mica powder to make your own acrylic paint. Also increases adhesion and extends paint without weakening it like water does.
Mica Powder Mixing Fluid
Mixes with mica powder to make a flexible shimmer paint for paper, card, wood, ceramic and canvas.
Mixed Media Medium & Varnish
A decoupage glue and collage adhesive that also works as a glaze and gloss varnish on wood, paper, canvas and terracotta.
Prime & mask
Gesso Primer
White, off-white and black gesso to prime canvas and other surfaces before painting. Non-toxic and made in Australia.
Clear Sealer
A clear, water-based primer that seals canvas, MDF, wood, tin, glass, ceramics, paper and board for excellent paint adhesion.
Masking Fluid
Protects areas of dry watercolour paper so you can paint freely around them, then rub or peel it away once the paint is dry.

Polymer Gloss Varnish
A clear, archival, non-yellowing varnish for acrylic paintings on canvas that stays flexible once dry.
Polyurethane Gloss / Matte Varnish
A water-based polyurethane varnish for rigid surfaces such as wood, in gloss or matte.

How to use acrylic mediums

Prime your surface
Seal or prime with Clear Sealer or Gesso Primer so paint grips and absorbent surfaces do not soak it up.

Pick your effect
Texture and body with gel, impasto or modelling paste; fluid art with pouring or flow medium; your own paint with binder medium.

Mix with your paint
Stir mediums gently into acrylic paint to avoid bubbles. Start with a small amount and add more until you get the effect you want.

Let it dry fully
Thick texture takes longer to dry. Allow texture pastes around 24 hours before painting over them.

Varnish when completely dry
Protect finished acrylic paintings on canvas with Polymer Gloss Varnish, or rigid surfaces such as wood with Polyurethane Varnish.
Always test a small amount first
Every surface and paint behaves a little differently. Try a medium on a small test area or offcut first to check the texture, drying and finish before starting your final piece.
